While options to care for pets are plentiful–from kennels to the 10-year-old neighbor girl–the services of Pet ‘n Nanny are provided and overseen by Certified Professional Pet Sitters (CPPS) Shannon and Gerry Arner who are trained, insured, truly caring and compassionate.
In business since 2000, the Arners take classes and attend pet sitting conferences to maintain their certification and keep up-to-date on all pet care information, regulations and new technology. They are trained to handle pet emergencies, care for special needs pets and administer medication. They utilize this education as the basis of their training and supervision of Pet ‘n Nanny employees, to continue the tradition and excellent reputation of providing elite, tailored, professional pet care.
Shannon founded Pet ‘n Nanny while working as a technician for a local veterinarian. Many of her customers lamented about boarding their pets in kennels and were worried about the stress it caused. These pet parents while away wanted to keep their pets at home where their companion animals were most comfortable and stress-free. Shannon offered to go to their homes and provide the pet care they desired. Pet ‘n Nanny was born!
Gerry Arner, who worked in the food & beverage industry for 10 years, and 9 years with family-owned commercial and residential alarm installation, co-owns Pet ‘n Nanny. He shares pet-sitting duties with Shannon, manages and trains new staff, and provides security quality control for the business. Gerry created the home security procedures Pet ‘n Nanny follows while pet owners are away – the handling of house keys, turning lights on and off, bringing in mail and newspapers and most importantly, not parking a car in your driveway covered with signage that advertises they’re pet sitting while you’re away. Gerry serves on the Board of Directors for The Pilot.Dog Foundation, a non-profit which assists with relocating dogs to their forever homes by flight travel. He is often referred to as the “Pet ‘n MANny”!
Gerry was recently honored with the award of Pet Sitters International Pet Sitter of the Year. Gerry served as the public face of PSI’s nearly 7,000 independently owned member businesses and represented the pet-sitting industry throughout 2016.
Gerry and Shannon are active volunteers in the communities they serve, including Wake Forest and Raleigh. Pet ‘n Nanny is a member of the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce. Gerry volunteers with the Franklin County Humane Society, Wake County SPCA, North Carolina Special Olympics and Safe Haven for Cats. Pet ‘n Nanny recently partnered with the Coalition to Unchain Dogs as their dedicated non-profit for fundraising as well as volunteer efforts.
Shannon Arner Having worked in veterinarian offices while enrolled in college, Shannon has a natural love and appreciation for pets. She’s one of those rare individuals who not only relates to pets, but also has exceptional people skills, organizational strengths and a keen business sense. Shannon earned a bachelor of arts in sociology from Meredith College in 2002. She met Gerry that same year and in 2005, they were married at the Meredith College Chapel.
Shannon served as a trustee and treasurer of the VFW-Wake Forest Ladies Auxiliary. Shannon served as Chair of the Ambassador Program with the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce, and as Vice President of the Wake Forest Chapter of WIN (Women in Networking). She also served on the Board of Directors for Wake Forest Downtown, Inc. and is a member of the Women in the Pet Industry Network. She enjoys volunteering with Gerry at the local animal shelters and various animal advocate organizations.
The Pet ‘n Nanny Team
Pet ‘n Nanny employees are not independent contractors, nor temporary employees. Our staff are paid employees who were chosen to complement our business with their strengths and skills currently possessed, but they also have a passion for care. Each staff member has to own the willingness to know and understand our Code of Ethics, and be eager to learn the skills taught during our extensive training period.
Pet ‘n Nanny’s training program is a month-long (or more) intensive program that involves hands-on training: shadowing, demonstrating of services, skills testing, as well as safety precautions, including becoming certified in Pet CPR and First Aid. Pet ‘n Nanny staff are also educated on how to handle crisis situations regarding your pet, as well as your home. Each staff member is tested on all of the areas of concentration during training, prior to conducting services themselves. The services you are accustomed to with the owners of Pet ‘n Nanny, you will experience with trained staff. Owners Gerry and Shannon Arner, Certified Professional Pet Sitters, oversee and supervise all staff and are first responders when/if needed. The Arners are very hands on with every single client and will continue to be in communication with every pet parent.
Additionally, all Pet ‘n Nanny staff undergo an extensive state and national criminal background check annually, as well as reference check prior to employment. The criminal background check is conducted annually during the term of employment with Pet ‘n Nanny. It should be stated that we as Pet ‘n Nanny owners have created a culture, one based on core values that are important to the owners and clients of Pet ‘n Nanny. Each staff member, including owners, are insured and bonded for your and our protection.

Beverly Mecum is one of our Professional Pet Sitters on staff. Beverly has been a part of the team, on a part time/seasonal basis since 2005. Beverly was born and raised in Raleigh, NC. She is a Meredith College graduate, and is also a full time Art teacher for Wake County. Beverly has a wealth of experience working with rescue and fearful dogs. She has a talent for making the most fearful cats and dogs calm and less anxious.
Beverly enjoys hikes and exploring the greenway system in Raleigh and Wake Forest. She resides in North Raleigh, with her husband Dennis, her bull mastiff/boxer mix, Oscar, and her “doctor”, a dachshund/terrier mix, Atticus- both rescues. She often uses her artistic ability for drawing pet portraits and utilizes nature and the outdoors as a muse for her creative work. She finds taking a walk with a dog, the most peaceful and meditative experience for both herself, and the dog she is walking- alleviating stress and anxiety from both human and canine. Beverly has volunteered with both, the SPCA of Wake County and Franklin County, and contributes to the Robeson County Animal Shelter with donations and financial assistance- in memory of her now passed, rescue dog from the same shelter, Zeke.
Jenna Taylor is a Professional Pet Sitter, and Midday Dog Walker. Jenna works seasonally with Pet ‘n Nanny while she is home for the summer, and on breaks from East Carolina University where she is majoring in Criminal Justice. Jenna is one of the rare folks who are originally from Raleigh! She joined Pet ‘n Nanny this year, and brings a detail oriented mindset, as well as setting high goals for herself- both qualities our pet parents love! She is highly organized and as some of our pet parents describe her, “she is efficient and dependable and always gets the job done with passion and purpose”. Jenna is a self-proclaimed animal lover, with a special fondness for senior pets. She has three dogs: two Chihuahuas, Beau and Paxton, and a Chorkie, Khloe. Paxton was recently adopted as she found him wandering the streets of Raleigh. When an owner could not be found, he called her mom, and her home is now his home.
Jenna volunteers with the SPCA, as well as the NC Special Olympics. She is dedicated to eating right and staying in shape. Those motivating factors, coupled with her empathy for animals, makes working with Pet ‘n Nanny the ideal job for her!
Hannah Jackson, originally from Oxford, North Carolina, moved to Wake Forest to pursue a Global Studies degree at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. She is our Lead Professional Pet Sitter. Hannah was given the superlative “most gentle spirited”. She has clients who have told her that she has “the patience of a saint and a calm, loving presence”. Her past experience in working with children, allows her to have the strong virtue of patience that she is able to transfer to each pet family member as she learns their personalities so as to know how to better care for them. She has a deep passion for helping others, which is evident in her care for our pet clients, as well as her dedication away from Pet ‘n Nanny.
She and her husband Asher volunteer with the North Carolina Baptist Men and Women with the Health Screening Ministry. She also works to raise awareness and works with victims of human trafficking, as well as fundraising for Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance in honor of friends who have the disease. Her favorite way to spend a weekend or a Sunday afternoon is hiking, camping, kayaking, or spending time with family and friends. She also enjoys playing the flute, writing, cooking / baking, learning photography, or spending time outdoors.
Brittany Clark, one of our full time professional pet sitters plays a key role in the day-to-day pet operations of Pet ‘n Nanny. She is also a student of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. She previously owned a small pet/house sitting business and wanted to continue the profession after moving to this area. She also has 5 years of experience working in an animal hospital. Her father was in the military; she was born in Arkansas, her family then moved to Turkey, where they lived for two years, prior to moving to Fayetteville, where they spent the next 18 years.
Brittany has a deep love for animals! She has a knack for connecting with them. She has a special gift and unconditional love for the often misunderstood bully breeds. Brittany is our resident “pibble whisperer.” She also loves children, whom she has spent the majority of her working years, until recently, caring for. Like pets, she loves caring for and helping kids of all ages learn and grow. She is also musically gifted- she has played piano for 10 years and has sang for 12 in varying groups. Fun fact: she enjoys playing and singing for both kids and pets. Her cat used to like sitting next to her while she played the piano.
She is a problem solver when it comes to cleaning up or organizing a pet’s home or environment while taking care of their pets. She has been known to go the extra mile and help pet parents with pet proofing their home, and also being a resource for recommending vets, food, exercise, treats, etc. Her clients describe her as being reliable and never having doubt about her care for their pets and their home. Her motto is, “If this was my pet and home, how would I want them cared for?” This is a trait that is consistent with Pet ‘n Nanny!
Her passions include “my faith in Christ first of all. He is what directs everything in my life. That’s why I am at SEBTS. Second of all, people. I love being able to help people in any way I can”, says Brittany. While not working or attending SEBTS, she enjoys walks in nature or at a park with her new husband, Andrew. She also enjoys being able to watch movies, and playing board games. Like most of our staff, she enjoys volunteering, whether it be at church, a horse stable on Fort Bragg, or at The Haven, which is a shelter for all kinds of pets.

She enjoys watching her son in Taekwondo and her daughter compete in gymnastics. In some of her free time, Julia takes pleasure in baking, gardening and taking her own dogs for a stroll. Julia is currently a volunteer at the Wake County SPCA, Paws for Life Animal Rescue and the Raleigh Food Bank. She loves bringing her kids with her to show them the importance of being a part of the community.
